सूर्य, चंद्रमा की भांति वृहस्पति ग्रह भी सौरमंडल का एक सदस्य है। समस्त ग्रह विंडो में सबसे अधिक वजनी और भीम का यह पृथ्वी की कक्षा में मंगल के बाद स्थित है। गुरु को काल पुरुष का ज्ञाता माना गया है। गुरु ग्रह को ब्राह्मण जाति, पीत वर्ण, हेमंत ऋतु का स्वामी, भूरे रंग के नेत्र वाला, गोल आकृति तथा स्थूल स्वरूप वाला माना गया है। गुरु ग्रह को ग्रह मंडल में मंत्री का पद प्राप्त है। वेदों तथा पुराणों के अनुसार ऋग्वेद में रुचि रखने, मृदु स्वभाव का स्वामी, उत्तर दिशा का प्रतिनिधि माना गया है।

गुरु ग्रह के अन्य नाम भी है जैसे संस्कृत में वृहस्पति , वाचस्पति, देवाचार्य, अंगिरा और जिओ के नाम से भी गुरु को जाना जाता है। अंग्रेजी में इसे जूपिटर के नाम से पुकारा जाता है।

यदि हम ऐसे पौराणिक दृष्टिकोण से देखें तो गुरु को महर्षि अंगिरा का पुत्र माना जाता है। महर्षि अंगिरा की गणना सप्तर्षियों से भी की जाती है। वृहस्पति की माता का नाम श्रद्धा है जो कि कर्दम ऋषि की सुपुत्री थी। पुराणों के अनुसार कई बार बृहस्पति को अन्य ग्रहों की अपेक्षा अधिक बलशाली, कोमल वृत्ति वाला, ज्ञान का प्रदाता तथा अत्यंत शुभ ग्रह के रूप में उल्लेख किया जाता है।

ज्योतिष मत से गुरु ग्रह को धनु और मीन राशि का स्वामी माना गया है। सूर्य, चंद्र और मंगल ग्रह गुरु के नजदीकी मित्र हैं। वहीं इसके शत्रु बुध और शुक्र ग्रह है। शनि, राहु और केतु के साथ गुरु समभाव रखता है। इसे पंचम भाव का कारक माना गया है। गुरु ग्रह को कर्क राशि में 5 अंश तक उच्चस्त राशि तथा मकर राशि में 5 अंक तक परम नीचस्त माना गया है। इसकी गणना शुभ ग्रहों में की जाती है। ज्योतिष में इस तथ्य के प्रमाण एक उदाहरण मिलते हैं कि अकेला लगना सतगुरु एक लाख दोषों को दूर करने में सक्षम है। गुरु ग्रह जातक के जीवन में 15, 22 एवं 40 वर्ष की आयु में अपना प्रभाव दिखाता है।

गुरु ग्रह भी चंद्र एवं सूर्य की भांति सदैव मार्गी नहीं होता, अपितु समय-समय पर मार्गी, वक्री अथवा अस्त होता रहता है। गुरु ग्रह को अंक शास्त्र में सूर्य और चंद्रमा के उपरांत दूसरा स्थान दिया गया है। गुरु ग्रह जातक के जन्मांग चक्र में जिस भाव में विद्यमान रहता है वहां से द्वितीय तथा दशम भाव को एक पाद दृष्टि से, पंचम एवं नवम भाव को द्विपाद दृष्टि से, सप्तम एवं नवम भाग को पूर्ण दृष्टि से देखता है।
यदि गुरु की स्थिति प्रतिकूल अथवा दोषपूर्ण है तो जातक नाक, कान, गले और नजले से संबंधित रोगों से ग्रसित रहता है। गुरु के अशुभ प्रभाव से हृदय रोग, क्षय रोग, कफ विकार तथा चर्बी जनित रोग जातक को प्रभावित करते हैं।

गुरु ग्रह को स्त्रियों का सौभाग्य वर्धक तथा संतान सुख का कारक ग्रह भी माना गया है। है इसके अतिरिक्त हल्दी, धनिया, प्याज, ऊन तथा मोम आदि का प्रतिनिधि भी गुरु को माना जाता है। यह बुद्धि, विवेक, यश, सम्मान, धन, संतान तथा बड़े भाई का भी प्रतिनिधित्व करता है।
