Vasant Panchami or Shri Panchami is celebrated on fifth day of bright half of Hindu month of Magh which usually falls in late January or February. Goddess Saraswati the deity of knowledge and education is worshipped on this day. Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati along with God Kama are also worshipped on this festival. Indian mythology also asserts that Lord Brahma created universe on this day.
This festival is associated with yellow colour. People prefer wearing yellow colour on this auspicious day while worshipping Goddess Saraswati. Kite flying is also practiced on this day in several regions of India. All the fields are covered with yellow mustard (sarso) colour as asymbol of beginning of spring season. If we go to the states of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh then it feels like the entire Earth is covered with yellow colour. Yellow coloured delicacies are usually prepared with the use of saffron on this auspicious occasion.
